It can be called many things depending on the state you live in. Whether it’s recognition, re-adoption, validation or domestication, it is an important step in the post-adoption process. A validation or re-adoption is the process which families undergo to have their county and state recognize the foreign adoption of their child. Re-adoption is highly recommended for the following reasons:
The State of Colorado requires adoptive families to validate (re-adopt) their foreign born adopted child in their Colorado county court of residence. CCAI will provide you with information and instructions for filing your child’s validation court paperwork. After validating your adoption you will be able to apply for a Colorado Certificate of Foreign Birth (similar to a Colorado birth certificate) for your child. A Colorado Certificate of Foreign Birth/state issued birth certificate is easier to read, easier to identify, and easier to replace compared with your child’s foreign birth certificate.
For families who reside outside of Colorado it is important to note that each state has different laws regarding how to obtain a state issued birth certificate. Many states require a re-adoption, domestication, or validation of foreign adoption in order to obtain a state issued birth certificate. Please contact your home study agency or an adoption attorney in your state to find out what is required to complete your child’s legal process in your state of residence.

Do you need an attorney for the re-adoption?
While use of an attorney is not a requirement, accessing the required forms is elusive in most counties in Florida. Also, navigating the court system without guidance can extend your readoption process and cost more money in the long run.
How long does the process take?
A readoption will take about one to two months from start to finish for the Court hearing. Paperwork can be filed in any county and if the court requires an in-person appearance, this can generally be done remotely, which means you can use an attorney in any part of Florida. After the readoption hearing is complete, your attorney will send the required paperwork to have the state of Florida issue a Certificate of Foreign Birth.

Ivy has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Production Design for Film and Theater with a minor in Studio Art. She had the opportunity to study abroad in London, England and Florence, Italy. After graduating, while visiting an orphanage in Kathmandu, Nepal she had a moment of realization and knew she wanted to work in the adoption community. After some prior experience in post-adoption and nonprofit management, she came to The Park and is really enjoying focusing on and being involved with offering lifelong support for adoptees and the adoption community.
Ivy was adopted from Kazakhstan at 18-months old and is proud of her adoptee identity and her adoptive family. She is passionate about sharing the stories of the amazing people in the adoption community and helping adoptees celebrate their identities. Her lifelong best friend was adopted from China through CCAI.
In her free time, she enjoys making art (she is working on a series of sculptural paintings of poached animal species), trying new food, catching up with friends, reading, and being with family. She loves to travel whenever possible.
