Meet Remi! He is an outgoing, playful and active 9 year old! His favorite subject in school is Art, and drawing and singing are some of his favorite indoor hobbies. Remi recognizes his name in Chinese, knows his colors, and knows how to count, but he speaks a bit slow and his language and cognitive development are delayed. He has great fine motor and gross motor skills! He loves to play outdoors, and his favorite activities include all kinds of ball sports. Remi is very friendly and plays well with other children. Although he is developmentally behind his peers, Remi’s special need does not inhibit his daily life, and he is able to effectively take care of himself and communicate his wants and needs. Remi can be timid and nervous in new environments, but a loving and supportive family can help bring him out of his shell and shine!
Here is what his host family shared with us:
“Remi is quiet and shy at the beginning but opens up once he gets comfortable. We noticed the difference in him by day 2 (once the jet lag wore off). He is VERY easy going and gentle. Doesn't get angry and really is only quiet or happy. It was a big deal when we finally saw a smile and heard him giggle. He has eaten everything we've offered him and has done everything we've asked with a gentle smile on his face. Not 1 tantrum or cranky period. He does not like loud environments and will tell our youngest boy (2 yrs) to "stop crying" in Chinese whenever he cries or is being too loud. He is proud when he learns something and is a great helper around the house. He likes helping me turn off the lights in the house before bed, cleaning the table after dinner, etc.
He clearly understands all the Mandarin we speak with him but it is sometimes hard to get an answer from him. We're just starting to figure out that if the answer is "No" he will be silent and won't look at you in the eye. But he will giggle or say “yes, good” if his answer is "YES". For example, we might ask him if he is hungry and he won't respond. But if he is hungry, he will say yes or giggle.
He speaks very quietly so you sometimes have to ask him to repeat what he said.
I really think he would blossom in a household where someone could give him a lot of attention. One-on-one focused time to help him catch up academically or with another sibling in the 4-5 age range and he would do quite well. He loves playing with our boys but I can see how he might get overshadowed easily since he is always so quiet and well behaved.”
Please help Remi find his forever family!
