Meet the fantastic Romero family—parents to two beautiful children with Down syndrome. Their son is biological, and their daughter, Liv, was adopted from Ukraine. So, what’s life really like raising a child with Down syndrome? Read on to find out!

“We adopted our adorable 3-year-old daughter Livia from Ukraine in August 2020. Because Livia has Down syndrome, she experiences some developmental delays and additional medical needs that require extra attention—but we’ve got an amazing support team surrounding her. From physical and occupational therapy to speech and feeding therapy, Livia works hard and loves the special attention during her sessions. She’s currently learning to walk, drink from a straw, and communicate through both speech and gestures.”
Since coming home, Livia has already met many of her therapy goals and milestones. The Romeros say they love celebrating each one! Because individuals with Down syndrome may have an increased risk of certain medical conditions, Livia has routine check-ups including blood work, eye exams, and hearing tests.
“Life with Livia is wonderful. She brings so much joy to our family. Like any other little girl, she loves music, playing with baby dolls, swinging outside, and spending time with her parents and three big brothers. She is more alike than different—and her diagnosis doesn’t define her.”
Their advice for families considering adopting a child with Down syndrome?

“Go for it! These children can thrive when given love, care, proper nutrition, medical attention, and developmental support. Adoption is never without challenges—but it is so worth it. Giving a child with Down syndrome a second chance at a fulfilling life is truly beautiful. We cherish our daughter and show her every day how worthy she is. We said YES—and we are so thankful we did!”
