Child matches/referrals are made by Consejo Nacional para la Niñez y la Adolescencia (CONANI), the Dominican Republic’s Central Authority, based on review and approval of a family’s dossier. Where prospective adoptive families are already aware of a particular child or sibling group they wish to adopt, such as in the case of hosting, and presuming the child’s availability for intercountry adoption, such cases will still follow typical dossier and referral procedures, although the referral timeline may proceed more quickly.
Families adopting from the Dominican Republic must work with a non-profit and accredited home study agency to complete their home study report. If you are living in CO, FL, GA, TX, or WY, CCAI will be your home study provider. For all other states, please visit the link below to find a home study provider in your area.

Adopting from the Dominican Republic is a meaningful journey that opens doors to new beginnings, offering children a second chance at family life. CCAI, a well-respected adoption agency, has recently expanded its programs to include a new Dominican Republic adoption program. This program aims to connect families in the United States with vulnerable children in the Dominican Republic, offering hope, stability, and love to those in need. If you’re considering international adoption from the Dominican Republic, CCAI provides a streamlined process, ensuring both adoptive families and children receive the support they need throughout the adoption journey.
Located just two hours from Miami, the Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation known for its vibrant culture, colorful landscapes, and rich history. However, beyond the beautiful beaches and bustling tourist destinations, many children are living in orphanages or group homes, often facing uncertain futures. These children range in age from five to 18 years old and are often part of sibling groups. Many of them come from backgrounds marked by poverty, neglect, or trauma, and some have moderate to significant medical needs. This can include neurological conditions, developmental delays, or other health challenges. Despite these circumstances, children in the Dominican Republic have so much potential for growth and happiness within a loving family. This is where CCAI steps in, working tirelessly to give these children the chance to experience the care and support of a permanent home. By partnering with the Dominican Republic's Central Authority, the Consejo Nacional para la Niñez y la Adolescencia (CONANI), CCAI ensures that the adoption process is both ethical and child-focused, providing a bright future for these children.
The process of adopting from the Dominican Republic is designed to carefully match prospective adoptive families with children who are in need of a home. It all begins with an application to CCAI, which includes completing a Medical Conditions Checklist. This helps the adoption agency understand a family’s preferences and expectations regarding the child’s medical needs and background. While some children may have complex medical conditions, many older children are physically healthy but may require emotional and mental support due to their challenging histories. Once the application and medical conditions checklist are submitted, families move forward with a home study and dossier compilation. This process takes approximately six to seven months, during which time the family undergoes interviews, background checks, and home visits to ensure they are prepared for the responsibility of international adoption from the Dominican Republic. After the home study is completed, the family's dossier is submitted for review by CONANI, which takes between 12 and 36 months to approve the family and match them with a child. Once matched, families can expect to travel to the Dominican Republic to begin a cohabitation period with their child. This is an essential step in the adoption process, where families will live with their child in the Dominican Republic for four to six months. During this time, the family and child can bond in a supportive and nurturing environment, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For families with flexible schedules, this extended stay provides a unique opportunity to "cocoon" with their new child, fostering deep connections and ensuring a smooth transition into family life. CCAI encourages adoptive families to consider remote work options or homeschooling during this time, as it is possible to balance both the adoption process and personal commitments. Some families may even opt to enroll their children in an American school within the Dominican Republic. Regardless of the approach, this extended cohabitation period is an invaluable part of the adoption journey, allowing both the child and family to adjust to their new life together.
One of the standout features of CCAI's Dominican Republic adoption program is the Host-to-Adopt initiative. Through this program, adoption-minded families have the opportunity to host a child from the Dominican Republic for a period of time, giving both the family and child a chance to get to know each other before proceeding with adoption. This is particularly beneficial for families interested in adopting older children, as it offers a unique window into the child's personality, needs, and compatibility with the adoptive family. In many cases, hosting a child becomes the first step in creating a "forever family." CCAI partners with Host Orphans Worldwide to find families willing to host tweens and teens, many of whom are nearing the age at which they will age out of the Dominican Republic's child welfare system. For these children, the Host-to-Adopt program may be their last opportunity to find a permanent family, making this initiative both life-changing and life-saving.
Families interested in Dominican Republic adoption through CCAI must meet certain criteria. Both applicants must be between the ages of 30 and 60, and heterosexual couples must be legally married for at least five years. In addition, prospective adoptive parents must be in good physical and mental health, and they must meet the income requirements outlined by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). For those worried about the complexities of international adoption, CCAI offers comprehensive support every step of the way. The agency ensures all families complete the required 12+ hours of parent training, which meets the standards set by the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. This training covers topics such as the cultural background of Dominican children, the challenges of adopting a child with special needs, and the unique aspects of international adoption.
When it comes to costs, CCAI prides itself on offering the lowest fees without compromising on service quality. There are no hidden charges or last-minute surprises, and the agency provides a clear and detailed list of fees and expenses required for adoption. Families can review the costs based on their state of residence, ensuring they have a complete understanding of the financial commitment involved.
Through the Dominican Republic adoption program, CCAI is committed to giving vulnerable children a chance at a better life. Whether through direct adoption or the Host-to-Adopt initiative, families can make a profound difference in the lives of these children, offering them the love, stability, and security they deserve. By adopting from the Dominican Republic to the USA, families open their hearts to a child in need, creating a future filled with hope and possibility. If you're considering international adoption, the Dominican Republic adoption agency program offered by CCAI may be the perfect path toward building your family.

Emily was adopted through CCAI in 2002! Having always admired the ways that the organization continued to support families even after adoption, she began working at The Park last year because she wanted to be more involved in the adoption community and according to her, “It’s been a blast so far!”
Emily is majoring in environmental science at MSU Denver and hopes to help mitigate the causes and effects of climate change. In her free time, she like to practice guitar, play video games, watch movies, and spend time with her friends and family.

Ivy has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Production Design for Film and Theater with a minor in Studio Art. She had the opportunity to study abroad in London, England and Florence, Italy. After graduating, while visiting an orphanage in Kathmandu, Nepal she had a moment of realization and knew she wanted to work in the adoption community. After some prior experience in post-adoption and nonprofit management, she came to The Park and is really enjoying focusing on and being involved with offering lifelong support for adoptees and the adoption community.
Ivy was adopted from Kazakhstan at 18-months old and is proud of her adoptee identity and her adoptive family. She is passionate about sharing the stories of the amazing people in the adoption community and helping adoptees celebrate their identities. Her lifelong best friend was adopted from China through CCAI.
In her free time, she enjoys making art (she is working on a series of sculptural paintings of poached animal species), trying new food, catching up with friends, reading, and being with family. She loves to travel whenever possible.
